Narrative
Elizabeth Ruby Tisher. Some places family name is RUBIN. Sources: Frank Moeckley, Britton S.Dak. (deceased); Carles Wm Tischer, age 93, on a letter dated 10 June 1961; Elsie's tombstone in 1953; Census 1870 Madison Twp, Polk Co. Iowa, Vol. 131 p. 585; Census 1885 Lincoln Twp, Polk Co. Iowa, Vol. 248, p. 130.
Elisie's family record lost in an old German bible.
Taking the several notes written on the long sheet that Fayetta or Florence had done before. Don't want them to be lost, and they might be mixed up, but putting in everything on that sheet.
Elsie and Pete came from Switzerland. Had children August Shield, William Shield, and Rosa Tisher. *1983 learned there was an older boy than August, evidently died at sea on way to America. Agnes Tisher said "yes", did remember Gram (would be Myrtle Tisher) mentioning something like that, only thought it was a girl. Passport says son.
Heard 1983, Wilhelm (Pete) had a suit on & bull didn't recognize him. Otherwise never would have done it, they said. (separate note) Another side to story: Wilhelm almost killed by bull on French Swiss border. His chest was smashed in but the Dr saved him. A part of his collar bone was torn out. Later came to US & died of typhus, as well as daughter little Rosa. Elsie destitue, no money to bury them. A man from Letke made the caskets so .....
(This note really mixed up. Talks of Elsie's 2d marr., and same note says:) "Wilhelm had been gored by a bull. Family settled in Ohio, later moved to Polk Co., Iowa. August born Ohio, but as small boy in Iowa until 1902 - that year to Del Rapids So Dak, 1904 to Marshall Co., S.Dak. until 1949.
(Elsie's 2d marr. put in below).
Wilhelm had 6 brothers & 1 sister. The sister died in Switzerland. Elsie's bros. & mother came later to America. Her father died in Switz.
(not on notes, Fayetta said she was told a place in Switzerland has many Rubins there now, the name was Rubin before Ruby??)
Elsie & Pete ready to sail for America. Her father died in his sleep. He was to come with them. Elsie had 7 cousins in Switz, all Rubys & all blond.
An old trunk brought from Switz by Tishers. Initials W. T. burned in.
The Tisher name was "Teuscher". "C" in Tisher probably dropped by our family. (would be more than "c"???) Census records Iowa state listed Fisher 1870 Madison Polk Co. Iowa. Wilhelm was listed as P-Fisher age 41 & Elizabeth 30. Another note says in the 1870 census all are alive - Pete Tisher is 41, Elizabeth 30, August 5. (Why not William and Rosa mentioned?) Rest of note names Moeckly family (Elisie's 2d marriage) J U Moeckly is 35, wife still home at 33, Lucille age 13 (male by census), John age 11, Jeff age 9.
Researcher said: Don't think there is a village name of Millersburg in Monroe Co. but had seen a road sign to a village by that name when going from Gary to Woodsfield. Thought near Wooster & New Philadelphia on State Rd 250. Country settled by Amish farmers, she thinks.
Elsie md. Conrad Moeckley (#2), an old man, but had a common law marriage with his son Jacob. Jacob's wife was in an insane asylum. Elsie and Jacob had three children: Franklin Benjamin; Charles Herman; and Phoebe May Moeckley. Jacob died, and his children by first wife kicked her, her two Tisher and three Moeckly children out. (will add here what I have heard about this.) Feel so sorry for Elsie, she had so much sorrow. A letter says what a wonderful person she was. Her common law husband was trying to have a farm for each of his children, and "worked himself to death". He had put 80 A. in Elsie's name. That was all she was able to keep. A hired man wanted her to take the family to court, but she said she would not do it.
Elsie's three Moeckley children are half brothers and sister to our Tisher line and part of our family. Elsie was hurt when a horse crushed her against a stall. She died at age 62. After her death, her son Frank Moeckley grieved so much he couldn't sleep. Then he dreamed she came to him and told him she was all right. After that he could sleep. I heard some relatives visiting mom and dad tell about the dream.fd)
The Ruby/Rubin and the Moeckly lines are more complete in their main books.
Adding notes regarding Elsie's 2d husband from Fayetta's earlier family records so it won't be lost. Some of it is already said above. This information probably is on the Moeckly set of records.
Conrad Von John Urlick "J.U." (also Jacob) Moeckly-69
Elsie actually legally married Jacob's father (J.U. Conrad Von John Urlick Moeckly), but lived common law with Jacob and had three children. The three children have been sealed to Wilhelm "Pete" Tisher and Elsie.
Info source: Pg. 1023-4 from "THE HISTORY OF POLK COUNTY, IOWA," Union Historical Co.; 1880 Des Moines, Iowa. MOECKLY, JACOB--Farmer, section 32, P.O. Polk City. Is a son of J. U. Moeckly, who was born in Switzerland, January 24, 1833, and was one of the first settlers of this township. He was a son of Conrad Moeckly, who died on the 30th of March, 1876. J. U. Moeckly came to this country in 1852, and in 1854 moved upon this farm, where our subject still resides. (???) He died upon this place, leaving a wife and five children: Jacob, John, Jefferson, George and Mary, all living. The subject of this sketch was married April 14, 1856, to Miss F. Haeglen, a native of Germany. The home farm consists of 240 acres, one of the finest and best improved farms in the township. He also owns 377 acres in Crocker township and 46 in Madison township.
Apparently Jacob's wife #1 F. Haeglen, was in an insane asylum and in those days you could not divorce them so he lived with Elsie Rubin.
